Monadchoice Ltd. are now using the concentrated product Cleanitise at Salubrious Place & St. David’s Shopping Centre in Swansea 7 days per week in order to enhance the walkways by removing all the mould and keeping it at bay.

Following rigorous trials with The City & County of Swansea Cleansing Department and Monadchoice Ltd, Specialist Contract Cleaning Company. Cleanitise is now being used daily through high pressure washer systems for the Pavement and Street Cleaning. It has been successfully proven without doubt that the chemical Cleanitise not only cleans the pavements, walkways and cobbled streets to perfection with its degreaser, cleaner and sanitising properties but it also removes any mould and algae which causes the surfaces to be slippery when wet.

When regularly using Cleanitise in this application it keeps the pavements free of mould simultaneously degreasing and sanitising all areas.

Swansea took the silver award ahead of bronze award winners Birmingham City and were only beaten to the gold spot by Truro City Council. The overall UK winner was North Norfolk District Council.

John Hague, Cabinet Member for the Environment in Swansea Council, said: “We have long recognised the importance of providing high standards of cleanliness and devote significant resources in to achieving this aim.

“The city centre over recent years has become an area which is active virtually 24 hours a day and has been the subject of many new initiatives aimed at improving both its cleanliness and its overall qualit in terms of aesthetic appearance and user friendliness.

“The Council and local city centre businesses have worked hard together to achieve the results we can now see today.”

Some of the initiatives have included the introduction of bigger and better litter busting equipment such as the Glutton litter collecting machine that’s operated manually by city centre street cleaning staff.

The Council has also launched the Streetforce initiative that’s given Council litter wardens the ability to issue on the spot fixed penalties to anyone spotted carelessly dropping litter and refusing to use bins provided.

Shoppers have also been rewarded for using bins and some have been issued with prize money to the same value as fixed penalties.

City centre businesses that make up the Swansea Business Improvement District (BID) have also contributed to help keep the city centre clean and have funded extra cleaning equipment and staff to spruce up the city.

Dave Kenny, Chairman of Swansea BID, said: “Winning the silver award is fantastic news for Swansea and demonstrates the commitment of local businesses to a cleaner city centre.

“This award is the result of a lot of hard work from the clean team staff, the BID cleaner group and Swansea Council. This award recognises the productivity of an excellent partnership between the BID and the Council and goes to prove that Swansea is cleaner than ever before.”

Cleanitise is an all-purpose surface cleaner, sanitiser and degreaser with effective germkill. It possesses superior antimicrobial properties and complies with BSEN 1040 and BS EN 1276 criteria. I was shown a demonstration of the system working in what appeared at first glance to be a perfectly clean and tidywashroom. Once the washroom light had been turned off and the Black Light turned on the walls and floor around the urinrils and sinks lit up with fluorescent light, apparently reflecting the proteins  present in urine and other contaminants. Under these conditions, the washroom could only be described as ‘disgusting’, although under normal conditions it looked and smelled clean.

Chris Luxton continued: “The Black Light identifies the problem and Cleanitise deals with it. I have tried most other cleaning fluids currently available and haven’t found any as effective as the formulation we have developed for Cleanitise. Literally one wipe around the contaminated surfaces and it’s clean – and the Black Light proves it.”

The Cleanitise system is ideal for use on hospital wards, on furniture, in washrooms, operating theatres and commercial kitchens. “Just this one product will handle everything for a complete hospital or an entire leisure facility,” said Luxton. “Both the Black Light and Cleanitise are now used on London Underground’s District Line every day, ensuring the highest possible cleaning standards.”

A team of three stewards will be patrolling the city at night and putting food wrappers, cigarette butts, flyers and discarded bottles in the bin.

It follows a pilot scheme which has been hailed a success.

Keep Wales Tidy officials applauded the street-cleaning programme, saying it would help give the city a feel good factor.

Communications manager Wynne Williams said: “This initiative is to be to be applauded. Other cities should be looking to do the same thing.

“If you visit a town and it is clean, it gives it a feel good factor. It can also make people feel safer.”

For the past five months, litter-pickers have been patrolling the city centre every night of the weekend as part of a pilot scheme.

Between 7pm and 11pm, wardens covered nightlife hotspots such as High Street, Wind Street, The Strand and Castle Square.

The £26,000 initiative was put together by Swansea Bid – a collaboration of 730 city centre businesses. Each business pays into a pot of cash that is supplemented by grants. Jennie Clements, chairwoman of the Bid cleaner working group, said the pilot scheme was now being made permanent.

“It’s an unfortunate feature of life that people drop litter,” she added.

“But in areas where there is a round-the-clock culture, it is important we don’t allow litter to build up – which is why we introduced night-time patrols.

“They have helped create a pleasant and welcoming environment for visitors and contributed to Bid’s overall action plan for brightening the city centre.”

So far, cleaners have collected 690 bags of rubbish on their night shifts – something which Wind Street regular Matthew Woolway, aged 30, of Gorseinon, thinks is a good thing.

He said: “It’s a valuable scheme for keeping our city clean. It’s important if we want to create a good first impression for new visitors.”
